Apple is bringing a high resolution retina display to its iMac line of desktop computers, Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller revealed at a company event today.
The new 27-inch “5K” display runs at a resolution of 5120 x 2880, which boasts 14.7 million pixels. Despite the resolution bump, Schiller said that the new display consumes 30 percent less energy than the non-retina version of the iMac display, which runs at a resolution of 2560 x 1440.
The new iMac with Retina 5K display is available today beginning at $2,499. That includes a 3.5 GHz quad core Intel i5 processor and an AMD Radeon R9 M290X with 8 GB of RAM and a 1 TB fusion drive, which combines solid state and spinning platters. Schiller said that an AMD Radeon R9 M295X is also available, a card that he said can crunch 3.5 teraflops. A 4 GHz i7 processor is also available.
